Oh Lord! Please Bring Me to My Senses

To this day the Lord has not given you minds that understand, nor eyes that see, nor ears that hear!Deuteronomy 29:4

The Israelites had watched as God split open the Red Sea to allow them to walk across on dry ground. They saw God’s daily provision of food fall from heaven. They were shielded night and day from their enemies. Yet they complained, longing for what they did not have and failing to recognize what God had given them.

It is easy to forget the blessings that surround us every day and instead clamor for greener pastures. How many of us thank God for our health, the breath that we breathe, the shelter over our heads, work to do, children that fill the house with sound and energy, a spouse who kisses us good-bye in the morning, good friends? Unfortunately, many of us experience the awakening of dulled senses only when we lose what we took for granted when it was right under our noses.

What blessings surround you right now? Take some time to try listing them. Even the smallest things become great when we realize how much they enrich our lives. As you name the ways God has blessed you, ask him for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to perceive the wonders that surround you every day.

FATHER, I thank you for this wonderful new day. Thank you for the food in my cupboard. Thank you for the child who gave me joy. Thank you for the comfortable chair where I rest after a hard day of work. Thank you for those who love me and those who hate me. Thank you for giving me eyes to see what I have and ears to hear. Thank you for a heart to respond in thankfulness for all that you have given me. Help me never to take any of it for granted.
